Hardware components will eventually fail, laptops will be lost or dropped, and ransomware threats continue to proliferate. The only difference between a minor afternoon inconvenience and a catastrophic business failure is a tested backup strategy.
The 3-2-1 Backup Methodology
Formulated by photographer and digital preservation pioneer Peter Krogh, the 3-2-1 rule is the industry gold standard for data resilience:
- 3 Copies of Data: Maintain your primary working dataset plus at least two redundant backup copies.
- 2 Different Media Types: Store copies across different physical media formats (e.g., an internal NVMe SSD and a dedicated external hard drive array or NAS).
- 1 Off-Site Copy: Keep at least one copy in a physically separated geographic location, such as a secure cloud repository, to survive environmental disasters like fire, flood, or theft.
Air-Gapped Backups Against Ransomware
Modern ransomware systematically searches connected network shares to encrypt backups alongside primary disks. An air-gapped backup—such as an external hard drive unplugged from all power and data lines once syncing is complete—is completely immune to remote infection.
The Ultimate Test: Verifying Restores
An untested backup is merely an unverified assumption. Every quarter, perform a simulated recovery test: attempt to restore a randomly selected folder from your cold backup archive to verify data integrity and recovery speed.
